Moka Pot Brewing Guides

The Moka Pot is a straightforward way of making a rich, strong brew over a stove. A Moka Pot is a compact and affordable brewer that gives you a concentrated dose of coffee, rather than an espresso replacement.

What you’ll need:

  • 12g coffee (approximately 6 teaspoons) in Moka Pot grind
  • Moka Pot
  • Cup
  • 100ml water (1.5 tablespoons less than ½ cup) at 30-40°C (¾ cold water + ¼ boiling water)
  • Kettle
  • Spoon
  • Scales, if possible, otherwise follow eye measurements

Brewing recipe:

  • Add 100ml warm water to the lower chamber of your Moka Pot.
  • Place the filter basket onto your lower chamber.
  • Add 12g coffee in the filter basket.
  • Screw the upper chamber and lower chamber together.
  • Heat on medium until you hear a gurgling sound, or when you see the water has finished bubbling through.
  • Immediately pour into your cup.

Pro tips:

  • For light roasts, using hot water doesn't give enough brew time to the coffee which can lead to under extraction. We recommend aiming for a 3-4 minute brew time for light roasts. The optimum starting water temperature should be about 30-40°C, use 75% cold water and 25% hot water to achieve this temperature.
  • For medium to dark roasts, the optimum starting water temperature is 50-60°C. Use 50% cold water and 50% boiling water to achieve this temperature. Keep on a medium- low boil. The brew time should average 2-3 minutes.
  • If you use too high heat, you will end up pushing dirty grinds through the filter which means that your cup will not be as clean.
