Madhu Agro Plantation is set high in the Eastern Ghats in the Koraput region of Odisha, and is run by mother-daughter duo Nirmala and Rajeshwari Reddy. Their aim is to successfully grow high-quality coffee, ensure habitat for wildlife, and provide viable employment opportunities for many tribal villages in the region. The coffees they have grown have a diverse range of unique flavours and intensities and can be described as pleasant, bright, sweet and balanced with a lingering finish.

Maa Mangala Plantation is located on the foothills of the Deomali range in Koraput and is run by a first-generation coffee producer, Saroj Swain. A combination of good agricultural practices, a slightly higher elevation and personal attention to each coffee plant has greatly enhanced the quality of his coffees. All the workers at the farm are tribals and 90% of these are women engaged in day-to-day activities and year-round maintenance work for coffee plants.

Kalinga Desiagro Foundation (KDF) is a not-for-profit organisation, that aims to bring innovations in farming practices at the ground level in Koraput and neighbouring regions. Their goal is to transform the farm-to-cup delivery chain and empower local communities that are part of the coffee ecosystem. By using a combination of financial incentives and strategic interventions in the coffee supply chain, KDF is enabling growers to adopt sustainable practices that are geared towards producing high quality coffee. KDF aims to disrupt the status quo by making strategic interventions at the farming, infrastructure and marketing levels.

Location: Koraput, Odisha

‘‘Coffee ain’t just coffee! — is something we always say. This season is extra special since KDF encouraged us to separate the beans according to varietals which adds value and allows one to savour the subtle differences.”

- Nirmala Reddy, Producer, Madhu Agro Plantation

“The initial years were full of struggle and the lack of any background in agriculture was a major stumbling block, but my plantation is truly a labour of love and passion for coffee has sustained my efforts and now I’ve fully dedicated myself to coffee!”

- Saroj Swain, Producer, Maa Mangala Plantation
