These coffees were sustainably grown, harvested, and ethically procured from around 224 smallholder tribal farmers in the Manyatorana FPC operation area of Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. This coffee collective was born out of the Sustainable Livelihoods for Smallholder Farmers program, which is run and implemented by the non-profit TechnoServe. The program helps smallholder farmers in the area by teaching them how to pick and produce coffee beans of the highest quality by using better farming techniques. The program overall aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers, their families, and communities in Araku.
The two washed coffees featured in this set were grown, harvested and processed in a sustainable, climate-positive manner, at micro coffee farms in the Hukumpeta region in Araku Valley.
Location: Manyatorana FPC, Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh
“We are mainly involved with training farmers to better their skills when it comes to growing, processing, harvesting and protecting their coffee crops since it is the source of their livelihoods. We also reach out to coffee connoisseurs all over the world who are on the lookout for sustainably produced, good-quality coffees. We feel very fulfilled with helping these smallholder farmers to sustain themselves and grow in the coffee industry.”
-D Venkata Ramana, Farmer, Manyatorana FPC
The Araku Valley Farmers Collective is run and implemented by the non-profit TechnoServe. Their Sustainable Livelihoods for Smallholder Farmers program in partnership with Walmart Foundation aims to improve the incomes of small-holder farming communities in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh by strengthening Farmer-Producer Organisations and transforming them into sustainable enterprises.
